"Dear Hodgkins-Curtin Park Neighbors and Community,
Hello everyone. I wanted to send this email to bring the "Yellow Park" community up to speed on the Hodgkin's-Curtin Park construction schedule.
As you may have noticed, the Hodgkins renovation is now underway. Our contractor has been confirming grading plans, cleaning drain lines, installing rodent controls, removing fencing and vegetation, installing construction fencing, and starting the demolition of the playground.
As we stated in previous emails, our staff will work with the contractor (Strada Construction) to complete as much of the playground as possible this fall. However due to the late start it is more likely that the completion of playground will be pushed back to the spring of 2010. Colder weather and cooler temperatures are an unavoidable problem for many of the products and materials that we will be installing.
With that said however, we are taking steps to accelerate the overall completion of the park. You may recall from community meetings and earlier communications that our initial plan was to phase the construction work so that the neighborhood could have access to the ball field over the summer while playground was being renovated. Now however, since school is back in session, and the ball field and playground have both been available for the summer, we are revising our work schedule and providing the contractor with full access to both the playground and ball field so that the ball field work will not have to wait until the playground is finished before it starts.
With this this revised schedule we hope to get the entire park completed by next summer. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but I am confident that this change in schedule will allow everyone better access to the park sooner. In addition, as we said in the community meetings, after the ball field renovation is complete, we will then need an additional full growing season, and possibly two, to ensure that the turf will support intensive recreational play, and therefore at a minimum the field will be closed next summer and fall. Then, in the fall of 2010 we will review the condition of the turf and determine if it needs to be closed an additional season.
During the construction period, I hope that you will visit other nearby parks, such as Nathan Tufts (Powderhouse) Park, Kenny Park or Seven Hills Park in Davis Square, or the Community Path. A copy of the City's Parks Map is attached to this email for your use.
The following items are a few other renovation related issues that I would appreciate your help with.
1) The park will be closed until further notice. Please do not try to use the park or cross construction fencing.
2) Experience tells us that there may be some minor increase in rodent activity while the initial park demolition is underway. Our contractor has rodent controls(traps) in place, but neighbors should make a point of keeping their trash cans securely covered.
3) We will be removing the younger children's play structure, swings, and spring toy from Hodgkins Park and installing them at Central Hill Park, in front of the High School, very soon. I do not have that work schedule confirmed but expect it will occur within the next week or two.
4) Please do not hesitate to call or email with any questions regarding any aspect of the park's renovation.
Thank you to everyone who has called and emailed their support of this project. I look forward to working with everyone you to complete it as soon as possible.
