Where do you swim laps in the winter around here? How do you like the place?

I only know of the Kennedy Pool near Porter, but I have not gone yet - have you?

I don't know if you're willing to spend any money, but I have a basic membership at Bally's in Porter. It's cheap and the facilities are fine. The pool lanes are a bit tight, but even at peak hours it's not crazy crowded. Works for me.

I haven't been, but the Cambridge town pool is brand new:

Also, it's across town, but the Hyatt hotel on Memorial Drive used to sell memberships to their pool, which (at the time, maybe 10 years ago) was very nice and well-maintained, especially by health club standards.

And there's the Mount Auburn Club in Watertown, which is pricier than the Bally's at Porter but (in my experience) significantly better at upkeep.

I added the swimming tag, so you can look at old posts on this subject.

It's a bit of a drive, but the Constitution Inn YMCA in Charlestown has low monthly rates and a great pool that's usually not too crowded.

The Cambridge War Memorial pool costs $4.50 for residents and $5.50 for nonresidents, with discounts for frequent use.

If I'm reading http://www.cambridgema.gov/CityOfCambridge_Content/documents/RecFall.pdf correctly, the general lap swim hours are very limited:

Monday 7:15 - 8:45 pm
Tuesday 5:30 - 6:45 pm
Wednesday 5:30 - 6:15 and 7:15 - 8:45 pm
Thursday 5:30 - 6:45 pm
Friday 5:30 - 6:15 and 7:15 - 8:45 pm
Saturday 2:30 - 4:45 pm
Sunday 12:00 - 4:45 pm

I joined the MIT Athletic Center (http://mitrecsports.com/membership-pass-types/default.aspx) when I was doing lap swimming. If you don't have a connection to MIT (student/faculty/staff/alum/family) it's $585/6mo, $885/year, which is certainly comparable to a club like Healthworks. One pretty good pool and one awesome pool. Check out the schedule to see if the hours that lap swimming is available are okay for you.

I used Kennedy years ago and liked it.

I swam the YMCA in Highland and it's pretty bleak, about the size of your average living room. More of a tiny "cement pond" than a swimming pool.

I find Kennedy to be just fine. Rarely crowded and I think they extended their evening adult lap swim by an hour. Not bad.
