Hey, is there any place around the Davis/Porter/Union Square area where I can consistently get fresh eggs (preferably chicken, but mixed with duck would be fine)? I've tried Googling, but I get a lot of B.S. and aggregate sites.

We stayed with friends recently who get their eggs from a neighbor and got hooked on eating eggs that are only 2-3 days old.

The Kick-Ass Dairy Bar (Highland Ave, attached to Kick-Ass Cupcakes) has farm eggs and milk. I couldn't tell you how old they are, generally, but they're a lot fresher and better tasting than stuff from the grocery store.

Also, the new Sherman Market in Union has fresh local eggs.

Dave's Fresh Pasta has them too, if I'm not mistaken.

I am not sure, but I think that Mayflower Poultry Company (aka "Live Poultry Fresh Killed") on Cambridge Street in Cambridge may have fresh eggs. How fresh they are precisely I don't know.

someone in my office raises hens so I occasionally get a 6-pack of fresh eggs (local and organic! Ha!). To be honest, I've never really noticed a difference in taste but the yolks do look/feel more vivid and firm.

They are definitely more...robust...is the only way I can think to describe it. In most cooking methods, esp. hard boiled, the white is much thicker and the yolk much more pungent. This description sounds gross but if you like eggs, it's very good!

They're much more eggy. Eating farm-fresh eggs for the first time can be a little surprising, because your eggs don't taste like butter or oil... they taste like EGGS in a big way. It's like the difference between eating a hothouse tomato and one straight from a garden.

Hey there- I was thinking of your post while I was at my favorite little Italian shop & grocer - Capone Foods. It's right on Mass Ave outside of Davis. Pretty much walk down Meacham on it's on your right. They now sell fresh eggs from a local farm. Check it out! Your other best bet is to hit Drumlin Farms in Concord- my roommates and I used to trek out there for the farm fresh eggs. Good luck either way!

They have flavor, as opposed to being hopelessly bland and pale and disgusting.

You can experience a similar difference if you buy the cheapo jumbo eggs at McKinnon's, and compare those to organic eggs bought anywhere (even if the organic eggs aren't extremely fresh). Except that not all organic or pastured eggs are alike, and many of them still do not compare to really fresh eggs from well-fed chickens.
