If you're on AT&T and your phone is even crappier than usual tomorrow at around 3PM, it's not Davis-exclusive, that's because a bunch of iPhone users across the country are running data-intensive applications to protest AT&T's crappy network. It's called Operation Chokehold. Enough people are angry about this, and AT&T's network is so stinkin' miserable, that it's going to make a dent. Just FYI.

and disrupting the network won't affect that? uh huh.

let's hope they get their service revoked!

It seems so counterproductive. AT&T will just turn around and say "See! The customer's awful behavior is the problem. If they'd just place nice and not waste so much bandwidth, we'd all be better off."

How can you tell the difference between someone who is deliberately trying to fuck up AT&T's network in protest and someone who is using a bandwidth-intensive application because they need to or want to use the bandwidth-intensive application? Not everyone twitters evil intent.

I know! And now they'll act as if this proves their point.

if someone who ordinarily doesn't do this, and decides to join the protesters... suddenly hogging the network at 3pm might be a clue. unlike a happy little anonymous DOSing, they are definitely findable.

if they're regularly doing it ANYWAY, they might just get a letter.

it seems that while AT&T has gone for breadth, they still haven't fixed depth. supposedly they are suffering from too much good fortune. maybe eventually they'll fix it.

unfortunately for AT*T they did say "unlimited". if they find people who are tethering, i'd imagine they'd cut them off too. can't imagine that people would be pulling down ISO levels of data, but there are probably a few bad eggs.

Like using DOS scripts to protest the slow internet.

What if someone who ordinarily doesn't do this happens to use a bandwidth-intensive app at 3pm, but not in protest?

AT&T might not be amused. who can say?

then again, AT&T will probably do absolutely nothing and ignore it.

wanna get their attention? call them up, tell them they are losing your business, and goto verizon or sprint or ... heck, bring the iphone along for the ride if you can jailbreak it, or go Droid...

money talks

I agree with you here.
I am the proud owner of a jailbroken and unlocked iPhone (used on T-Mobile, although not 3G, as I have the first generation phone). ATT doesn't have my business yet because they fail to impress me, and I'm not willing to give up a cheaper plan for sub-par 3G service and a two year contract.

i ditched Sprint due to a number of factors, but mostly because their sales team kept calling me EVERY single day to upgrade, special offers, whee... they just wouldn't stop, despite attempts to convince them. this was after them texting me practically hourly, and i didn't have a text plan "don't worry sir, these are FREE texts". then the emails to my phone started. at $3 each. had to have techs disable that pathway ;)

so i called them, escalated to what amounted to God, and said "one more call, one more offer, that's it, we're done, and i'll write the bloody president of the company and tell him why i went to AT&T..."

well, they called. got the person's name. i told the person right then and there i was going to AT&T and they were at fault. i got their manager, got his name, told him to read my case file - he said "holy shit!" when he read about the literal weeks of harrassment ;> nobody seemed to be willing to let me off the phone ;) i eventually got to God again, who said "well, i understand, but i wish you'd change your mind." let them know that they PROMISED me to stop calling, guaranteed it, and yet, here we are. i even gave up many months of free service. wrote their president.

got an iPhone. couldn't be happier.

2 weeks later, it rings, it's Sprint. they'd like to know if i want to come back, special offers, free phone, all that. "well, my bill is paid? i don't owe you a penny? good, give me the highest level supervisor you have there today, i want to speak to God". got not quite God. told him my opinion on this matter "well, it's our job to try and retain you". sheeeeet man. sent more mail to their President. a week later another call saying "well, we're sorry you're not happy with us, let us know if we can ever help".

amazing really.

Whiner!

What do you expect from a congested network? If you don't like it, the solution is simple: MOVE (to Verizon). Otherwise, stop whining about network traffic.

I think "You have to share the road with us" better describes the message of events like Critical Mass. True that iPhone users and Boston-area cyclists are both prone to be heedless of etiquette, though!

Would the complainers have to pay an early termination fee to change carriers? If they could reasonably expect good service for their money, and they are not getting good service yet must continue to pay, then I think they have good grounds to complain.

Esto. I am a longtime T-Mobile customer. I have had many opportunities to switch carriers, both between contracts and as a result of adverse material changes to active contracts. I could never find a compelling reason to change. Excellent customer service, great reliability, decent coverage, no scandals: Yeah.

That, and they want to continue to use their spendy trendy iPhones. They're exclusive to AT&T until 3Q 2010. Even then, they may not be able to take their current iPhones to new carriers.

I'm an evil Verizon subscriber. T-Mobile or Sprint totally suck in many of the buildings where I work...
