Does anyone have an old, low-end laptop sitting around collecting dust?

I'm asking on behalf of a friend without an LJ account, who is looking for a used laptop with the following specs:

- PC, not Mac
- has a power cord
- at least 256MB of RAM
- can have an ethernet cable plugged in
- screen doesn't matter as long as it's readable at all (screen will only get used during installation)
- OS doesn't matter; it'll be wiped and have Linux installed

Nice to have, but not required:

- at least 4GB of disk

You can leave a comment here or PM me (send a model # so it's possible to check for linux compatibility)

(Craigslist and ebay are also being explored, but finding one -really- locally would be much speedier.)

Too late. I sold my laptop this afternoon for $120 (great deal). I'd check Craigslist, though they tend to price high.

P.S. Is it that tough to have an LJ account?

What's the price range? I'm looking to sell my netbook that satisfies all of those requirements (dell mini 9).

that's probably overkill too, and at a good price :)

I have a couple old IBM thinkpads in a closet that fit the bill, except you'd need to find a PCMCIA ethernet card. And they've got Linux already, so I'm certain that works. I'm pretty sure my wife would be happy to be rid of them. Send me an e-mail.

this ebay auction never worked out due to nigerian scammers winning each attempt.

point is, fits the criteria, except that it no longer has a power cord, but they're available for like eight bucks on amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Notebook-Adapter-Battery-Charger-Inspiron/dp/B0026K0L92/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266648761&sr=8-1). right now it is serving as a laptop stand for my newer, crappy laptop.

oh also it doesn't have a battery, and if you try to put a battery in, the screen will stop working.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 I'm going to be looking to unload shortly. Battery works but is "reaching the end of its useable life." Still has power cord though jack can be finicky. One of the monitor hinges has come out of alignment.

Though it's rather beat-up and a few years old, specs-wise it might be way more laptop than your friend is looking for--80GB disk space and I think 1GB memory, if not 2. Drop me a comment if there's any interest, though, and let me know what your friend is looking to pay.

i don't know this person but

no, but i can understand not wanting to sign up for *yet another* service when it's even easier to have a friend post for you.

these days i know i feel like i'm having to pick usernames and remember passwords and confirm accounts for way to many effing things that i don't intend to use more than once.

It's not so hard if you always use the same username and password...

It's also not so hard to just hand out copies of your house key to everyone you meet. That's not to say it isn't a terrible idea.

Perhaps if you mentioned what it was for, and how much you are willing to pay...

i was lent a supremely old HP by someone before someone else gave me a slightly less ancient business laptop. i'm not sure if he wants it back or not, i wouldn't see why. it can't run without the power cord and Has to have the ethernet plugged in. when it first turns on the screen is a little pink but after a few minutes it's fine.

i'm assuming you've found what you need already, but if not i'll look up the model number and get in touch with said friend...
