Voter registration deadline TOMORROW
Aug. 9th, 2005 11:34 amThe 2nd Middlesex state senate special eleciton is coming up in a few weeks: Tuesday, August 30th. State law says that you have to be registered to vote at least 20 days before any state election, to be allowed to vote in it. That means if you're not yet registered at wherever you live now, the deadline is tomorrow, August 10th, 8pm.
You can register in person at your city hall. If you live in Somerville, your city hall is at the corner of Highland and School Street, next to the high school and the main branch of the Somerville Public Library. You register at the city clerk / elections office, downstairs. Or, if you live in Davis Square, there may be a more convenient way to do it: Two of the candidates have offices in Davis. If you support one of these candidates, just walk into their office, tell them you want to vote for them and need to register, I'm sure they'll do it. Michael Callahan's office is right at Davis Square, and Pat Jehlen's is on Elm Street in the Social Security Building, right next door to Hollywood Express video (between Anna's and the Dunkin Donuts, opposite side of the street from Diesel).
The district covers all of Medford and most of Somerville (and also all of Winchester and a bit of Woburn). The only part of Somerville not in this district is a couple of precincts in the east, around McGrath highway. If you're not sure whether you're in the district, go to WhereDoIVoteMA.com and look up your address. Scroll down near the bottom to see who your state senator is. If it says "VACANT" then you get to vote on August 30th... if you register by tomorrow!
This is the most important election in the state this year - it's the only state office coming up for a vote this year at all, all the rest are municipal - and it is likely to be very close. The winning margin could be in the tens, or hundreds.
(Personal note: If you live in the Davis Square area, your state rep is either Pat Jehlen, who is running for this Senate seat, or Carl Sciortino, who strongly supports Pat Jehlen. Whether or not Pat wins may depend on how high the voter turnout from Somerville is. If you want her to win, ask all your friends if they're reigistered and if they'll remember to vote for her on August 30th.)
