Every New Year's Day at noon, the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission holds a ceremony at the Prospect Hill Tower to commemorate the raising of the First American Flag on January 1, 1776.

A small parade, led by a re-enactor playing George Washington, leaves the City Hall parking lot at 11:30, arriving at Prospect Hill Park for the noon ceremony. There will be light refreshments (probably hot coffee, cider, and donuts), short speeches and songs.

In past years, the city has invited the public to climb the tower at the end of the ceremony. I assume they will do so again, but I can't guarantee it. This is usually the only opportunity for the general public to climb it each year.

Here's the city's official press release for the event.
