The folks at Donor's Choose forwarded this project to me, and I figured I'd signal boost... Mrs. Karlin at Somerville High School is looking for 45 copies of Catcher in the Rye for her kids to keep, highlight, mark up, cuddle with, etc. There's a ton of worthy projects in the area, but this one's special to me because I've always been a fervent re-reader and was privileged enough to grow up in a home with books readily available. I think this project could make a big difference in the kids' education and, for those who really get something from the book, it would let them keep it and re-read it long after the class ends. I don't think I can say enough about how much books saved my life during some hellish times as a kid. Anyways, the link's above, and you can donate literally any amount. If the project isn't funded, the money is "given back to you" to spend on another project (I don't think they recredit it to your credit card). Check it out.

[livejournal.com profile] jdh0625 posted a link to this article in this thread earlier, but that thread is a few days old, and I wanted to give this more visibility:

http://www.wickedlocal.com/somerville/news/x1655341061/Somerville-residents-slam-Beer-Works-proposal-for-Davis-Square

In summary, of the 75 residents who attended Monday night's community meeting, almost all were opposed to the Beer Works proposal, for numerous reasons that you may or may not agree with. The developer's plan B is to split the building into smaller units and lease them to a chain massage parlor, a tobacco store, a Subway, and/or a Burger King. The residents who attended were obviously also upset by this alternative plan.

There's also a thread on reddit here: http://www.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/1n4d83/somerville_residents_slam_beer_works_proposal_for/

I am looking for a recommendation for Sunday pickup ( so not Dave's) for a platter of small tasty sandwiches and/or wraps for a party of about 15 people. It needs to include vegetarian selections.  Thanks!

I've got seven helical-scan data cartridges suitable for the Exabyte drive that I no longer have. These are Maxell HS-8/112 (2.5/5.0 Gb) tapes, their original wrappers unopened. If you're using these for backups, you probably want some more. (If you aren't, you certainly don't need them.) I originally bought them for $5.99, and from what I can tell from the Net, the lot is still worth $20. No shipping charges, since we'll meet somewhere near Davis.
