I wrote to my Alderman and got this back:
The idea of zoned parking was proposed before and it did not fly. I agree that a permit [should] be city wide. [...] I have no plans to support a zoned parking permit program and I will make sure the traffic commission knows that I do not support any changes to the current program.

Looks like they know that there's not much support for the concept.

The only benefit I've ever seen of zoned parking is that it keeps people from abusing citywide parking to take up 2hr/resident spots to say, park all day and take the train to work instead of taking their local bus or other less convenient mode of public transportation (Hellooo Holland Ave) . That said, I enjoy taking advantage of the city wide parking permit to park near businesses not easily traveled to using public transportation from my home and not take up meter/outside of somerville customer parking spots, so I am glad it is not changing.

I think any communication from a public official is by default public anyway.

I don't think *any* communication from them is by default public, but I do think specific stances on political issues (like the email above) can be considered to be, since if their public statement would be different, that's a real problem.

(But I know where the OP lives so I know who said it, anyway. ;)

Ha! I do that all the time!

Or not all the time, just when I need my car immediately after work. Usually I bike or take the T.
