I looked for the tire post, but couldn't find it.. maybe i'm misremembering what community it was in. Does anyone know a place very close by that sells SNOW tires and will change and store the tires over the summer? I know a place in Woburn that does, but don't know what the local experience is. Thanks.

DirectTire is awesome...

I use them, and have been overjoyed by the quality of their service. With them, you pay to have your winter tires mounted & balanced once, and then they will do the remounting/balancing for free after that (for changing back to summer tires, and then back to winter).

They'll also store your tires for $75 per season.

Closest is probably Watertown or Danvers...

$75 storage fee? that seems mighty high. that would probably include that magic swap/remount fee too i'd guess? tirestorage isn't tricky.

a lot of people i know are happy with TireRack.Com - you get the fitment / price / quality level you feel like going into (basic to hyper), and they shipp'em to you (mounted on rims as an option). i've never had any local chain/store manage to beat them. with the tires on rim option, it's a matter of just using your handy jack (or buing a better ($20-40) jack and perhaps a GOOD lug wrench, and doing it in the driveway (friend bribery doesn't hurt for help). store the tools in the trunk and you're ready for disaster too :>

as for storage, well, if you find a friend with a basement, dry garage, closet, laundry room and bribe them with nice food, that'll be less than $75. i keep mine storage in a couple trash bags (dirt/smell), and stuffed in a back closet.

the one time fee for buying tools and doing it myself costs less than the twice yearly fee of having to drive to my shop and having them do it. a bonus is that i know HOW to do it, practice, and in the event of a road side change, i can.

plug: www.rimpro.com - bend alloy rims? they can fix them! generally less than the cost of buying a new rim. yay.

Off of prospect st between inman sq and union sq there are a lot of salvage/used auto parts dealers. I went into one, I forget the name but you can tell they sell car parts because the front drive kind of looks like a junkyard, and bought a matching set of barely worn all terrain tires for my jeep at only 35$ a piece. They put it right on the wheel rim free of charge, the only hassle is taking all of your tires off to have them changed, not so bad in the summer, but I guess it's cold in boston or something, I don't know, florida's nice.
