I'm looking to buy my boyfriend some guitar lessons for his birthday. Does anyone have any recommendations, preferably in Somerville or Cambridge? He's a beginner - dabbled a bit at home but doesn't really know much technically. Thanks!

I highly recommend Janet Feld for lessons. I met her several times and had the privilege of sitting in with her on a few informal lessons and kitchen jam sessions. She's a wonderful person and an incredible patient and talented teacher: http://www.janetfeld.com/

There are also a lot of talented folks that work out of Wood & Strings in Arlington Center: http://www.woodandstrings.com/lessoninformation.htm

Sam offers lessons at his home in Cambridge and out of the Music Shop right in Porter Square. He's a good teacher and a really interesting dude. I had never played an instrument, was musically inept, and struggled mightily with even the easiest of songs. I took 20+ 1 hour lessons with Sam and... well, I'm still not good. But I can work my way through most songs with enough practice, I know the basics of music theory, and I got to hang out with Sam!

If you take lessons at his house, you get to meet his roommate Darla, which is an experience in itself.

The music shop is no longer there, so he only teaches lessons at his home now.

A friend and bandmate of mine, (a berkeley music grad), teaches guitar, more than happy to put you in touch. Very reasonable rates as he doesn't have the overhead of paying a % to a music store, etc.

Message me and i'll get you his email and phone number.

There is a music studio there again!

There is now a music studio on the third floor in that building (1904 Massachusetts Avenue); I do not know if Sam Davis is teaching there or not, but lessons are given there.

www.massavemusic.com is their web address.

I didn't know that, thanks for the update!

He hasn't mentioned anything about teaching in Porter Square again and he's not on the list of instructors, so my guess is that he's not.

I second Sam Davis. He's the man. It's worth it to go to his house for lessons - he's near inman sq and his environment is highly creative.
