hey gardenish folks -- i have about 300 square feet of just-rototilled soil and nothing more to plant in it! where's a good local source for seeds (yes i know i'm LATE!) or seedlings? the space gets tons of southern sunlight, & it'll be all grass again in three days if i'm not prompt. flowers or veg or whatever are fine.

thanks in advance... :)

If you can make it down to Union Square, Ricky's on the corner has pretty stuff.

you're also not late; as we actually had frost warnings just last friday, you're pretty much at about the right time. It *feels* late only because this spring has been warmer than they usually are. The ground isn't really warm enough for Tomato seedlings until June (consistent days above 70, consistent nights never going below 55).

I also like Pembertons, and will take this time to remind people with Brown Cards that you have a discount there on Gardening supplies and plants!

Tags carries a lot of nice fruit and vegetable seed; Pemberton has a different selection, plus a lot of nice seedlings. A little further away, the Mahoney's on Western Ave in Allston? Brighton? whatever also has a lot of plants.

If you can wait until 5/26, the Davis Sq farmers market is a great place for seedlings.

I was always told not to plant seeds around here until after Memorial Day, because of the chance of frost at night.

Like [livejournal.com profile] thespian, you're not at all late for this area. Seeds or seedlings that can be planted outside right now are beans/peas and lettuce/spinach among other things (the seed packets will say whether you need to wait for last frost, aka memorial day). You can also start all of your frost danger seeds inside in prep for memorial day.

Russo's in Watertown has a good selection of seeds and seedlings too.

Bonny's Garden Center, on Bay State Road near the Fresh Pond/Alewife rotaries, is a lovely small shop.

The Healey School on Meachem Street (not Meachem Road) on Winter Hill has a seedling sale every year that is a fundraiser. They were selling lots of seedlings cheap in front of the school Friday afternoon - I think they are still selling them but I'm not sure the schedule. You can call the school 617-625-6600 (ask for the Healey School). The money goes to the school and the seedlings as good as you'll get from a garden store, for less than half price.

You can't generalize about "seeds." Peas can go in as soon as you can work the ground in March. Corn is really prone to rotting and has to wait until June. Most plants (that you'd want to plant around here) will fall somewhere in between.

I know it's a bit far from Davis Square, but Drumlin Farm in Lincoln (where I volunteer) is having their annual seedling sale this coming weekend.
The weather is supposed to be great this weekend so it'd be a fun day to commune with nature and pick up some seedlings!
May 22-23 from 10:00 am to 4:00.

Have fun with your garden!
