There is a huge increase of Saturday markets around, for those who don't have access to a market during their workday (I actually shop at Davis on my lunch hour, so it works in my situation). Off the top of my head there is Winchester, Cambridgeport, JP, Waltham, and Union Square Somerville on Saturdays, and a tiny market at Harvard Square on Sundays. The full schedule is at www.massfarmersmarkets.org
But yes, markets tend to end by 6 or so to allow the farmers to get home and farm n' stuff. However, Brookline (not open yet for the season) tends to run until dark for some reason. That's on Thursdays and it's a great market.
I was very happy with the selection at today's market - it's been so warm that all the crops are ahead of schedule, which is a nice treat. Strawberries in May (they had samples but not enough to sell) is unreal!
