Chester Street in front of Redbones is closed, and it's full of NStar trucks. There's a big temporary generator parked on Elm Street near the Burren. A cop told me that a transformer blew up tonight. Anyone know more specifics?

Specifics-ya it's Hot

Jk Ron, but yes it is hot-that transformer blew yesterday possibly about 1pm, so he is right it did go boom/die but he is wrong as to when. It is the type that handles heavier duty power demands namely commercial AC units. The Burren had lost use of their Ac about 2pm yesterday because of this scenario but that battery/generator they have setup is powering most places now til they replace the 2 transformers that are dead

I am not really sure- whatever it is I hope they don't run out of it that is for sure!

On a serious note I do believe this is the second time this particular transformer has blown. The one in the manhole by wine&spirits has blown at least 3 or 4 times-Basically Davis does not have the appropriate power for it's needs and business's

They had a truck out there, running very very quietly, but I don't know what it was being powered by.

For what it's worth, the old looking transformer they had out on the street that I can only assume was the one being replaced looked like it was at least 20 years old. It was of a significantly different design from the ones they were installing (among other things, it lacked heat sinks, where the new ones had them).

Sounds great, I must of got confused as to which of the dead transformers had gone bye-bye. Well hopefully these new ones will last a long time

Yep - it appeared that the new ones had aluminum casings (with heatsinks) - the old one steel, without... Generally looked like a more serious bit of kit.
