I teach a Bootcamp class at a local gym and am interested in occasionally taking the class outside during the nice summer months. I have read online that Somerville parks are open from 8am-8pm, but I'm wondering if this is enforced (my group would be there around 6:30am) and if anyone has had any experience with this situation before I dive in and start calling the town. Thanks so much!

I've never seen any Somerville park with a fence and gate around it, so I wouldn't worry about this as long as you are not making noise.

It is enforced and you'll get a $300 fine for being out without permission _regardless_ of whether or not there is a fence or gate. I know because I have an Outdoor class that I run as well! (http://www.mountainstrength.com/oc/) I recommend contacting the alderman of the area you'd like to have the class as your first step, as there is no permitting process currently in place for small group classes.

(there, I saved you about a month of work figuring that out ;) )

Not so much resistance as a need to follow up quite a bit. Something like this is not a priority in the scheme of things, so just stay on the ball and I doubt you'll have many issues. Keep in mind residential areas close to where you want to have classes, as that will be a roadblock (and rightly so)due to possible noise complaints. And you can't have Dilboy Park, that's mine ;)

isn't Dilboy a state park?

Dilboy has different rules, sunrise to sunset, but is still under the Somerville Park and Rec jurisdiction for care. Slightly different rules, but permission was asked regardless. I know that in the other parks, as the OP was asking about that are 8-8 and city owned, it's a $300 fine :)

That's awesome! Getting outside is totally fun, and a great change of pace. I've loved my classes and I think you'll find your clients like it too! =)

Now that, would be awesome. These things do in fact exist! ;)

The Walnut St. Park has a fence and gate! (It's mostly to keep little kids IN and dogs OUT, though. There's a latch on the gate, but not a lock.)
