Hey Kids,
I was wondering if anyone knew of the best way to get to the Vineyard from Davis? I have a houseguest who doesn't have a car and is trying to get out there some time this week. All ideas appreciated!

The basic idea is to go from South Station by Peter Pan or Bonanza to one of the ferry terminals, and take the ferry from there. I know that you can take the Peter Pan to Woods Hole, and catch a fairly regular ferry from there... but you might also want to check out the various ferry options to see which one has the more favorable schedule / is cheaper / is faster, and figure out how to get there by bus from there.

It takes a LONG TIME. Tell your friend to head out early if s/he is just going for one day.

S'true. Check out the schedules and make sure this makes sense as a day trip.

One could also fly to the Vineyard, but I honestly have no idea how expensive that'd be.

Flying is ca. $250 roundtrip at this time of year.

Flying is quick, 30 minutes once you're on the plane. It's a beautiful flight, too. I just checked www.flycapeair.com, and $250 seems about right. The bus/ferry would be a bit cheaper, I suspect.

Peter Pan to ferry is easy and you can buy the whole ticket (bus+ferry) at once from Peter Pan.
Just a note for when she returns: the ferries go to Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven. On the return, apparently it is not uncommon for the Oak Bluffs ferry to leave from Vineyard Haven instead. (it has to do with wind/choppy water I think) There is a bus between the two towns - they're not far apart - but it was really a surprise to have a switch like that happen!

There is a great hostel on the Vineyard; it's a long way to go and not stay overnight! There's so much to see out there!

Presuming the weather's OK. The Vineyard airport is very susceptible to fog, so it's quite usual for flights to be delayed or canceled.
