I bought one of the newfangled swipe at a parking meter cards on a whim, and it seems finicky about swiping (takes multiple tries) and works sluggishly. I'm going to give it a few more tries before I give up on it, but I'm curious as to whether this matches other people's experiences.

After that, if it still sucks, I plan to find out what happens when I take it back and ask for a refund of its cash balance.

Yep. I call 311 every time one breaks down, at which point they theoretically come and replace the hardware, then send the wonky hardware back to the manufacturer (I think for free, because the manufacturer is pretty invested in this pilot program's success).

After maybe ten "your cardreader's broken" calls being logged by 311 over the course of a year, however, 311 transferred me to the meter-fix-it folks, who said "no, we don't go right out and fix them." I got the impression that replacing them was so far down the priority list it never happened (which is kinda good, because I'd rather the sewers work, but kinda annoying, because why'd they take the info the first ten times?!)
