Looks like a new restaurant is opening in Davis. My spies tell me it is open already, but here's an short article that says it opens on Monday. New grub! If you try it, let us know?

You know, I saw that the last couple of times I was in the Square, and I kept meaning to check the DSLJ to see if I'd missed people talking about it. Sounds like my kind of place!

The sign outside says that it opens on Monday.

Their website is currently broken, with an endless redirection loop.

There were a dozen or more employees in there last night unpacking wine and liquor for the bar and other stuff as well. There were also a couple of very cute kids sitting in one of the booths getting a preview of the menu. Definitely not open to the public last night. Hope it's good!

I wonder if they'll make it.

Raw bar? Deal me in.

I'm going to guess yes

I'm going to guess yes because it looks well capitalized. From the amount of money it looks like they spent on the renovation, it has that "in it for the long haul" feel. And, it's owned by the same guy who did the Independent and Precinct, so he's got some successes under his belt.

Unless, of course, the food sucks, in which case all bets are off.

Working in a technical sense, yes. It's freaking illegible, though, with light text on a busy background. Hope the food is better than the web design.

you might want to get your eyes checked :) (i'm not really qualifying the design itself, but it's very readable over here)

Looking forward to another late night alternative in the square, especially once their lounge part opens. J-Tree is too collegy and Burren gets too packed/has a cover

most restaurants go out of business within a year due to running out of money, so i don't think "they spent a lot of money getting it ready" is necessarily a good indicator :)

I do hope that it works out. It's an awesome location so I imagine the only big issue might be the cost to rent the place.

It's a little tricky to read, I agree - the menu page in particular. Also, it would be nice to see prices. Or the correct spelling of a Caesar salad.

Yep, fixed since I last posted. They are taking reservations online starting Tuesday, September 7.

Gah! You're right. That's horrible.

Or, you know, the address on the main page or in a link clearly designated as holding location information. (It is displayed when you click the online reservation link, or the contact button, but neither of those were especially obvious.)

My only worry looking at the menu is that they've got a distinct lack of focus with nothing really original. Salads? Sandwiches? Bistro entrees? Freakin' flatbreads? Yep, they've got all of that, and it doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary.

What stands out is what's unique to the area: a raw bar and, of all things, bratwurst with sauerkraut. Mm!

Clevernonsense, yeah, most restaurants do. I was a hotel and restaurant management major in college and it's one of the most disheartening things about the industry. My intent with mentioning the renovation was to note that they weren't opening it on a shoestring budget. Many restaurateurs do and assume that they'll cover their costs from month 2 or 3 and make things nicer as they go along, which rarely works because once patrons have an impression of a place, it's usually pretty set.

As for the menu, I'm always intrigued by spatzle. The only way to know is to taste, though!

I was just drooling over the bratwurst with sauerkraut sandwich.

It's not completely unique as a restaurant niche, but it seems like it doesn't have too much competition just like it directly in Davis, and while the types of items fall into "upscale-ish bar food" category the actual choices look really appealing - you can have upscale-ish bar food where people are excited about ordering what's on the menu, or upscale-ish bar food that makes them pass by when they look at the menu.

I've been excited about their raw bar for, oh, MONTHS.

There was a friends and family night tonight. A friend of mine attended and reported back that the bar was amazing.

I don't know about that. A good coq au vin is a rare and special find. Here's to hoping theirs is good.

Yeah—leaving prices off the online menu is unbearably pretentious (or, occasionally, inept; hard to be sure given the general competence of the site).
