Even if it's not still under warranty/applecare, Apple may replace it for free. According to Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5039036/apple-magsafe-replacements-are-now-free), Apple is replacing them as defective for certain MacBook models. Even if your model isn't on the list, I'd take it to the genius bar at the Apple Store and show it to them; if it looks defective, they may give you a new one anyway.
