I had a $900 lens disappear from my building's lobby a couple months ago (the same week there were several other folks with the same problem of missing packages). The kicker was, the shipping label said signature required but they left it anyhow (at least according to the tracking info).
Thankfully Amazon is awesome and sent another item and I had no other problems. Amazon even sent it fedex the second time :)
I do prefer fedex in general, but I've also had great UPS drivers so I dunno, I hardly would blame a driver for not leaving a package where he/she didn't think it would be safe.
