Raybern Co. / Builders Specialty Hardware is moving

Raybern Co / Builders Specialty Hardware on Weston St. Teele Sq., sellers of hardware for doors, cabinets, windows, etc. is moving to Charlestown. The property has been sold and will be developed into 17 condos, "luxury" no doubt. This completes a long process for this property which used to have a lumberyard and specialty mill-work shop. The lumberyard was developed a while ago.

Yet another business leaves of Somerville. Sad that a longtime successful business tenant is not more valued than a quick development windfall but hey, these are market forces at work I guess.

Where are they going in Charlestown?

I didn't get the address but the fellow said "in the front of the Schrafts Building", but I don't know if that means actually in the Schrafts Building or an adjacent building. So Sullivan Square. I think that they are moving in early 2011.

Somehow, I don't think they're being forced out: there are several lumber and construction businesses near Sullivan and it makes sense to be closer to their customer.

That may be but the guys that I talked to said "the building has been sold and we have to move". Now, it could be that the owner of the building and the business are one and the same and this is a chance to cash in and move to a better location.

Still, I hate to see a successful business move out in favor of more condo development.

I never knew they existed, and they sound useful - do they sell items off the shelf to the public? We just grabbed a latch plate at TAGS today but there are a lot of other small door/cabinet hardware things in our house that could be improved upon... (I guess it made morse sense to be there when people could buy all their cabinetry and trim needs in the same place - I think that was before my time in Teele Square though - last disappearing lumberyard I knew of was Somerville Lumber )

Yes, they are a retail business. They have a very nice showroom with lots interesting looking and probably high end stuff. They stock a number of hard to find items that I would have otherwise had to buy online (some hardware for sliding doors). They also have a side room with more standard Stanley type hardware.

They're immensely helpful if you need unique or top-end stuff. I can see why it makes more sense for them to be near other stores catering to builders and contractors, though.
