So AJWright near Union Square is leaving.  Who will take their place?    I'm going to start fantasizing that Trader Joe's will move in.  It does seem to be the right size for them, and we know (I know from old postings in this forum) that they only want locations with parking (Back Bay location being an exception).  Seems like the demographic, closeness to major modes of travel would be hospitable.

I'd love to see a Trader Joe's in Somerville, but they have expressed no interest in the vacant Winter Hill Star Market when asked about it in the past.

On the other hand, would Ocean State Job Lot be interested in this location after the city told them they couldn't move into Winter Hill?

Ocean State Job Lot opened in Wellington Plaza about a month ago. They have the old Stop and Shop location.

There's another AJWright in Wellington Plaza too. There's a lot of empty storefronts in malls now. What I'd really like to see is an Olive Garden restaurant.

why would you want a fake Italian restaurant in a city with so many real Italians?

i also can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but either way it's hilarious.

admittedly, their salad and breadsticks are eerily unmatchable.

Target

My bet is that Target expands into that space. The Somerville Target is very small compared to others and it seems like they've expanded all their other stores that were the small size.

It would be nice to have something more interesting, but a bigger Target would be good too.

There was a lot of news coverage of the Winter Hill Star Market and Ocean State Job Lot last year, where the owner of the Star Market claimed that Trader Joe's were not interested: Links

Target isn't what I'd call "East Somerville"; it's closer to Union Square.

It is, they tell me, the "smallest Target in the nation." They said they don't have much storage as a result.

From what I've read about Trader Joe's they seem unlikely to want that space. They carefully select sites based on very particular demographic data and one of their required data points is advanced degrees. I don't know that that *particular* neighborhood would meet their criteria and I don't know that they expect people to travel very far (esp considering the new store at Alewife).

Trader Joe's small stores don't have much of a back room, so ordering from the distribution centers has to be precise.
This distribution process helps determine where the company opens its stores. Texas and Florida have cities that boast consumers Trader Joe's covets, but insiders say the current distribution infrastructure makes it difficult for the company to efficiently get products to those states. To pick their next locales, employees look at demographics such as education level. In the past they've even looked at who's subscribing to high-end food and cooking magazines as a way of divining where the epicures are.

Rest of the article (which I found very interesting) is here. (http://money.cnn.com/2010/08/20/news/companies/inside_trader_joes_full_version.fortune/index.htm#joe)

Exactly. I'm not kidding, sometimes I just get a hankerin' for Olive Garden. There are none anywhere near here either. I think the closest one is about halfway to Cape Cod.

I doubt it's the advanced degrees: plenty of college-educated folks live in East. More likely it's the fact that there's also one at Central in addition to the one at Alewife.

A Target with a bigger grocery section, like the one in Watertown, would be excellent.

Because sometimes I have a hankerin' for "fake Italian" cuisine, as opposed to "real Italian" cuisine. They are totally different, and I want the choice. Bertucci's just doesn't have the same offerings as an Olive Garden does.

I would think that the pile of amazing restaurants in Union Square (like the newly opened JOurneyman) would convince Trader Joe's otherwise! Oh well.

Well, at Central for values of "at" that involve being almost a mile away. (0.8 mi according to Google Maps walking directions).

The AJ Wright/Target location is a fair distance away from both Memorial Drive and Alewife TJs; it's also near a major commuting route if they're looking to get "stop by on the way home" traffic.

(Personally, I'd like to see them open another location there but I don't expect them to.)

there's one at South Bay shopping center in Dorchester -- Red Line to Andrew, then long walk or shuttle bus

Olive Gardens 'near' 02144

I had such a bad meal at the South Attleboro one, on the way to a Pawtucket Red Sox game, that I'll never try it again

Somerville and Watertown Targets were both originally Bradlees. I didn't realize Somerville's was considered "small" but I guess I've never been to a really big one.

Yes!

This would be awesome. Sometimes, you don't want Italian, you want *Olive Garden*. They're two totally separate meals that should not be confused with each other.

I've gone to a few all around the country in my life, and never had a truely bad experience. Even had consistently wonderful service at one that was near where I used to live a decade+ ago (in another state). But, hey, all employees aren't the same, so if the waitstaff/cook is having a bad day, of course there's going to be bad experiences.

I might go to Dorchester someday, but that's a long trip for a "comfort" meal. Closer (anywhere north of Boston near 93) would make me happier.

Trader Joes likes smaller spaces than the Winter Hill Star Market site -- 10,000 to 20,000 square feet. Isn't AJ Wright much bigger than that?

there was one in that plaza off 93, what is it called...south bay? i guess that could be considered half way to cape cod depending on where you live and if you have car ;)

anyway, yeah, i know what you mean - sometimes you just crave a certain thing. sometimes i *want* greasy "chinese" food or cheesy bread from dominoes, and not whatever the "real" thing is.

The newest TJ's at Alewife is the opposite of clusterfuck. Bizarre, overly spacious aisles and front and back ends, or maybe I've grown too accustomed to the crowded norm. But apparently they hear that a lot in this store. They are hoping that someday the ruling in MA that chains can only sell liquor in 2 of their stores, will change and they can narrow the aisles again and stock all their two-buck chuck.

the alcohol rule is so fucking ridiculous, i remember just being in awe it didn't pass thanks in part to the completely absurd scare-tactic commercials that went along with it.

at the time i was living in quincy, walking distance to the T, and could go across the street to the convenience store and buy beer and wine. i also went to the star market there, and next door is a brooks drug store which is also a full liquor store. like, this shit ALREADY EXISTS and there's not random outbreaks of everyone getting smashed in the parking lot and then killing each other. i do not understand all the fucked up things surrounding booze in MA, and that is just the tip of the iceberg.

sorry, /rant, but omg.

Really? Which locations?

I've never had trouble getting around in a TJ's. The only issue I had is the long checkout line at the Back Bay location.

Their small size is part of how they make money while keeping prices down. They have much higher sales per square foot than any other grocery chain. And they can open in established, built-up areas where a megastore wouldn't fit.

Date: 2011-01-14 09:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sparkgrrl658.livejournal.com
i have been to the ones in back bay, brookline, fresh pond, cambridge...seriously every one i've been to has been like back bay, with crazy lines flowing back into the aisles (though not as nutty of a maze as back bay, but still), and the aisles are not big enough for carts. they are, but then there is no room for anyone to get by you, especially if they also have a cart. i don't understand how you can design a store like that. it's just endlessly infuriating to be standing there going "excuse me" while some can't-be-bothered yuppie is taking a half hour to pick which frozen organic veggie meal they're going to have for dinner.

further, i recall a LOT of pre-packaged produce. i can pick out my own items and minus the waste, thanks. i just don't understand the allure of it, i guess. give me whole foods any day.

The problem might be the urban TJs. The ones in Acton, Tyngsboro, Burlington... all fine, with nice big aisles. And let me tell you, Tyngsboro is not exactly yuppie-ville.

meh, whatever, they have great produce and great sushi for it being a grocery store and for the price. i do most of my shopping at star, but when i need certain things i always choose whole foods. there is also a bunch of shit i buy there because it's WAY cheaper than shaws/star/stop&shop. it's only "whole paycheck" if you have so much money you don't care and just buy ALL your groceries there and get everything name brand, really no different than any place else.

plus, a great bakery and delicious beer. AND SAMPLES. the hot/cold food "bars" are retardedly expensive but delicious, but i avoid them because spending $20 on lunch is crazy.

Arlington Heights TJ's is pretty crowded (without liquor), and that's definitely suburbia.
