Hello crafty folks,

I have a fantastic lamp in the shape of an elephant. My kids love it, but the electrical guts are from the 1950s and the cord is neither grounded nor safe. Any ideas on where to get it re-wired nearby? Calls to electricians have been unsuccessful (job too small, weird, etc.), but I'd welcome any suggestions.

Many thanks!

Here's a thought...how about calling a local Vocational school and asking them if their students could do it for you? Tell them you'll pay for it, just like a professional service. I know when toured the local VocTech school where I live, the kids did all sorts of projects for the community, and got paid for it. It's great experience for them. Not to mention it will help you! Good luck!

There a lamp repair place in Cambridge St. in Cambridge, near Lechmere, run by a cheerful older gentleman. It's called Colman Electric, 351 Cambridge St, Cambridge, MA 02141, 617- 876-4000. We've taken random old lamps to him for years and he always manages to find a way to make them work.

There's a place right outside Davis on Mass Ave in Cambridge between the St John Church and Pemberton Farms that repairs lamps. Their website is http://citylights.nu/

In a similar vein, maybe someone from Parts and Crafts (http://partsandcrafts.org/) is willing to help you out and give a kid a project.

I believe Sprout (thesprouts.org) also has project/repair nights for this sort of thing. Can't find a current calendar but they listed them in the latest Somerville Scout.

Highly recommend City Lights on Mass. Ave. I've had antique lamps rewired there and they do great work, sometimes while you wait. Not cheap, but safe.

http://www.greenbrookline.com/ is a general fix-it shop.

I'm not sure if there's a similar shop that's closer to Davis.
