I'd like to commission someone to create a piece of fan art for me, to be used on a card to Joss Whedon. Are you an artist who is familiar with Whedon's work and can render such a thing, in fairly short order? Do you know someone who is? Is there a nearby school of design where I could advertise for someone?

As far as schools of design go, there are always RISD (http://www.risd.edu/) and MassArt (http://massart.edu/).

I would ping [livejournal.com profile] ellenmillion if I were looking for nifty line art, but I don't know her policy on fan art.

If it were only last week... Matt Ryan was at Arisia, doing custom pieces for $10/10 minutes. (http://www.mattsminestudio.com/)

Can't say enough good things about his work. I'm going to be framing a piece he did for dueling easels.

Connecticut is too long to schlep, but he might be willing to mail you something.

You could give Etsy's Alchemy (http://www.etsy.com/alchemy/) a try. You post what you want done and people respond with proposals.

Local ... then Alchemy

If you don't find someone local (and I'm sure you will), I can recommend Alchemy. It's a service on Etsy where you post your wish, how much you want to pay, and when you need it, and then artists bid on it. It's really really neat -- I just got some truly awesome things from there -- but I find most people dont' know about it.

That said, I'm sure there's someone local.

I don't know how soon you need it, but Boskone (Boston's sci-fi/fantasy convention) is Feb. 18-20, and there's a large art show and usually several artists in attendance. You could post to their LJ ([livejournal.com profile] boskone) or get in touch with them to see if they would put out a note to their registered members. Website: http://www.nesfa.org/boskone/index.html

Good luck!
