HONK!TX is a 3-day Community Street Band Festival that will feature some of the most exciting, original, and talented radical marching bands playing absolutely free and in the streets all over Austin on the weekend of March 11 to 13th, 2011.
Inspired in the tradition of the original HONK! Festival in Somerville Massachusetts, HONK! Fest West in Seattle, and PRONK! in Providence, HONK!TX is a collaborative gathering of marching bands that defy simple categorizations.
The festival will bring music into Austin in an unprecedented fashion, transforming everyday spaces into organic stages where the line between performers and the crowd dissolves.
After extensive planning and feedback from community and city staff we're bringing HONK!TX to 4 locations throughout Austin over the course of 3 days. The following are being finalized and subject to change:
Friday Night - East 6th Street at Medina Street
Saturday Day -Hyde Park/Central Austin: Hemphill-Adams Park
Saturday Night - Downtown: One Congress Plaza, 2nd Street District, City Hall
Sunday Day - East Austin: A public park to-be-determined
Sunday Night - A showcase performance of participating bands in a music venue or theater space
For the duration of the Festival, more than 200 musicians will be housed by generous neighbors and friends and local restaurants will generously provide food for the performers and volunteers. Scores of community members will donate hours of labor to make HONK!TX possible.
Most significantly, none of the bands will be earning any money for the festival, and most will have only some of their travel expenses covered.
The bands are inspired to travel great distances, at great personal expense, to joyously celebrate our hard work to reclaim public space—the world over—for all people
