My friend is looking for spaces for her wedding and I'm a big advocate of Davis Square so I was looking for some places in the area that might work for her. It looks like the armory does not rent out for parties. Any suggestions? It would need to be a location that could hold about 50 people.

The Nave Gallery?

Yep - not renting out for parties was one of the conditions for approval of the Armory.

A little far from Davis, but we had a great experience having a party at the Somerville Museum.

The Masonic Hall in Porter Sq. has a nice kitchen with their hall and a great dance floor. I think Redbones will rent the downstairs and the Burren will rent the back room. I'd expect most of those churches on College Ave. (I think there's 4 of them) have halls they'd rent out. Springstep in Medford Sq. definitely rents out. St. John's Methodist church near Watertown Sq. is known for being a great rental deal.

Does the Museum of Modern Renaissance (http://www.mod-ren.com/index.htm) (aka the house on College Ave. with the giant face on it) rent its space out? It's ridiculously beautiful and joyous inside, and should be big enough. There was a glass harmonica performance there during Open Studios, so I know they have public events sometimes.

thats the size of our wedding and we didn't find anything in the Davis area (other than the "eff it" backup option of the VFW). We ended up going with Oleana since we didn't really care about dancing and we also had an afterparty at our house (Oleana is only from 11-4).

Not in Davis, but she could try the Arlington Town hall, or the library reading room, depending on the size of the event.

Also, tell her to stay far far away from the Commandants House in Charlestown in the Navy Yard!

Just noticed you put the guest count at about 50. The Robbins Library Reading Room would be perfect!

Were they terrible? They were at the top of my wish-list for spaces when we started looking, but the rental fee alone would have killed our budget, so I didn't even go look.

Not near Davis at all, but if she's looking in the general Boston area: we ended up having just under 50 people at the Henderson House in Weston, and we had a great experience.

My friends got married at the Somerville Theater a few years ago: rented out the big theater, showed some videos they had made, had the actual ceremony on the stage: it definitely looked a little empty, because that is a huge theater, but it was an awesome wedding!

I know Gargoyles has done wedding parties of that size in their dining room before.

The Armory is way, way too big for 50 anyway. Like ten times too big.

The cafe (first door on the left as you walk into the Armory) is about the right size, but I don't think you can rent it for this purpose.

First Church and Unity Church on College Ave definitely do rent out their basements. However, I believe both have a no-alcohol policy, if that matters. (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about that).

A little outside of Davis

We had great luck with the Greek Church on Central St for my friends wedding. There were fun to work with and the prices were really decent.

Again, not in Davis, but in Medford. Springstep rents out their dance studios of various sizes for very reasonable prices. That's where we ended up after searching endlessly for something in Davis. They were great to work with. Good luck!

Awful.

The space itself is lovely, but they were completely unprofessional with us, misrepresented a lot, and sprung a lot of extra last-minute fees on us.

And we still had a fire alarm going off for 20 minutes during our reception.

Burren

The back room at the Burren?

I'll second the suggestion to look at Springstep. I've had professional meetings there, and it's a gorgeous space. You bring in your own catering (it was a work lunch, and we had Qdoba, heh), and it's very airy and spacious, with lots of big windows. Definitely worth a look.

Outside of Davis or the city, I would also suggest the Commander's Mansion (http://www.commandersmansion.com/) out in Watertown. We decided against it for our wedding because it was too small, but it could be perfect for a small wedding.

Good luck!!

how bout the room behind the rosebud?

I have a fantasy of having an event in the green room at powderhouse, but I don't think it's ready for business.

If the Armory is not allowed to rent out for parties, why did I see a notice that an Alderman is having a time there?
