Your friend is most certainly misinformed. Mary lived in Sterling and was a little girl when the incident happened. The schoolhouse relocated to Sudbury, and Mary ended up living her final years here in Somerville, on Central Street! At an address that is now the Greek Orthodox church. Maybe Mary did marry the director of McLean Hospital, and her childhood story got confused. The ditty was well known in her lifetime.
