Frances Moore Lappé and her Small Planet Institute are looking for a new manager for the organization (the second in command, and I think the only employee of the organization). If you are a big fan of Lappé's work, and are good at admin and support work, this would be an awesome job. (It's in Cambridge, walking distance from Davis, from what I understand.)

Small Planet Institute Manager


The Small Planet Institute (SPI) is seeking a dynamic leader who shares the organization’s mission to serve as Institute Manager. This position works directly with Frances Moore Lappé and is responsible for the overall management of the organization. This is an opportunity to work at the center of a small organization on a variety of important projects that require execution by a person with the energy to keep up with a fast-paced environment, the flexibility to work on a wide variety of assignments, and superb interpersonal skills. The Institute was founded in 2002 by Frances Lappé and her daughter Anna Lappé. Responsibilities of this full-time position include:

1) Outreach

a. Arrangements for speeches, tours and events: Point of contact for all interviews and speaking engagements for Frances Moore Lappé and joint events with Frances and Anna Lappé. Responsible for honorarium negotiation, contracts, invoicing, travel booking, advance work, invoicing, and any follow up.

b. Maintenance and continuing development of SPI web sites: Ability to liaise with design and development contractors as needed.

c. Written and oral communications: Creates, coordinates, reviews, updates written communications on website, publicity, E-letters, and other special projects. Edits material prior to publication.

d. Publicity and marketing: Oversees outreach to academia about SPI books. Periodically works with publicists (e.g. a book publisher’s) promoting SPI work; and occasionally originates publicity for SPI books and events.

2) Administration

a. Recruitment and supervision of part-time staff and interns

b. Office management: Responsible for general office management, keeping detailed records, maintaining and developing administrative systems to improve office efficiency. Coordinate with IT support and other vendors as needed.

c. Executive Assistance: Supports Frances Moore Lappé by managing schedule, travel and a few other matters as a way to maximize efficiency.

d. Financial transactions and records: Develops and manages the budget. Oversees all aspects of bookkeeping; including invoicing and deposits. Acts as liaison with accountant.

e. Non-profit record keeping: Acts as secretary of the SPI Board of Directors and ensures all records are up to date and appropriate forms filed on time.

3) Strategy and program development

a. Participation in evolving SPI goals and strategies: Assists in the planning and implementation of long term goals.

b. Monitoring and reporting on SPI progress

Qualifications:
Demonstrated commitment to the SPI mission and goals

Familiarity with the issues with which SPI works
Successful previous experience in a similar role
High levels of energy and enthusiasm
Excellent writing and editorial skills -- both promotional and analytical

Facility with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Comfortable with website maintenance and development

Bachelor's Degree or the equivalent


The Small Planet Institute office in Cambridge includes Ms. Lappe, the Institute Manager, a part-time program assistant and interns. SPI is co-located with Ecologic Development Fund. Highlights of what 2011 holds for SPI include: This fall Nation Books will publish a new book by Ms. Lappe that will involve a national book tour. Foreign editions are being negotiated. It is the 40th anniversary of her first book, Diet for a Small Planet, and special events are being planned for the fall. She will speak at roughly two dozen events. Anna Lappe, in the Brooklyn office of SPI, is producing a video about food politics.
