found: ATM card

i went to the Citizen's Bank ATM across from the Holland St. entrance to the T today around noon, only to find an ATM card left in the machine. if the owner could send me a message with the name on the card and the bank it was issued from, and I can arrange to return it. if i hear nothing by sunday afternoon, I'll drop it by the somerville police department.

If the bank is one found in our local area, I suggest dropping it off at a branch of that bank on Monday.

If you have the card with name on it... why not post the name? So that person knows that it's theirs? They should still have the rest of their wallet to be able to prove a name.

Just a thought to make it easier for the person who lost their card. they may not even realize it just from "I found a card".

That. Or, if it says 'return postage guaranteed' on the back, like most ATM/Credit cards, drop it off at a post office.

Alternately, if you put the card in the atm and use the wrong password a few times ("1" for example) it'll eat the card and the bank will take care of it.

I strongly feel you should not do this. All ATMs have a camera, if you try to actually guess the password (and with some peoples poor passwords, you might succeed with AAAA) whether or not you are successful, you may be technically arrestable as a forger or a thief.

Think of it this way: if you forgot your ATM card somewhere public, and some random person out of the blue contacts you, wouldn't you be at least a little unnerved? I know I'd likely at least change my PIN if not ask the bank for a replacement card (since who knows how many people might now know my private ATM number, etc).

I recommend dropping it in a mailbox or bringing it to the proper bank on Monday.

That ATM has the slowest card return ever. Not shocked that someone walked away without their card- its likely they thought it had gotten eaten by the machine.

Returning the card to the bank (if convenient) is probably the fastest way to get it back to the owner and avoid having to issue a new card.

By now they've likely reported it lost and it's a moot point.

Another good thing to do is to call the number on the back of the card and report it to the bank as lost. That way they can make a note right away of the card being lost and also contact the person.

(This is equivalent to bringing it to a branch, but good if you don't have a branch nearby or don't want to take the time to go over there.

that's what i was going to say. it will suck the card in and eat it, not magically mail it to the owner.
