anyone have any recommendations for a good and/or cheap(ish) piercing place in the area?

Boston would be fine too so long as I don't have to wait in a line for several hours with teenie boppers getting their belly buttons done.

Tribal Ways on Mass Ave (short walk from Hynes T stop) is a great place. Not the cheapest but they really know what they are doing as well as being run by a Registered Nurse.

Chameleon Tattoo & Body Piercing (http://harvardsquare.com/directory.php?id=190&cat=shop) in Harvard Square. I've never had an actual piercing done there, but they changed my tongue ring and were really nice when I had to get a shorter stud.

I had my navel done there (but I'm no teenie bopper!). They were very professional and efficient, and there was no wait in line. I recommend them highly.

Keep in mind that going to the piercing parlor and meeting the piercer in advance to see if this is someplace and someone who you feel comfortable to do work on your body. Ask about the process, healing times, and anything else you want to know. If it feels right, schedule an appointment. They'll treat you better if you show them this level of concern. Teenie boppers just walk in and demand the piercing without doing the research or showing concern about the healing process (generalization).

My last one was at Tribal Ways (back in '99) and I did just what I described. I was impressed by their professionalism when I first met them and discussed things and was pleased with how well they treated me during the session.

I really recommend Tribal Ways as well. My friend and I had our noses pierced at Chameleon and we were really dissapointed with the lack of professionalism and the amount of teenie boppers (I have a lot of body piercings and tattoo's and am post-college so I felt really weird there--and did have to wait in line). They gave shitty aftercare advice and we both ended up with infections (granted that's usually the fault of the client, not the shop, but we were very careful with our cleaning instructions and didn't touch the piercings with bare hands). Mine became embedded and when I went back they took out the old jewlery and repierced the hole with an oddly bent nose screw that was very uncomfortable. I asked if I should use a ring since the stud became embedded and they said it was no big deal. When the infection got much worse I went to Tribal and they put me on a treatment plan and did everything Chameleon *should* have done.

Since then I've gotten a tattoo from John at Tribal with much success and my nose infection healed up thanks to their great advice and care. They really aren't pricey compared to other great shops in the country, and the slight price difference between them and Chameleon is well worth it for their professionalism. I know a lot of people use Chameleon, but I can only tell me own experience. Good luck!
