While setting up for my yard sale on Ossipee Rd, I saw a dark gray chinchilla dart underneath my roommate's car. I've never seen one before (I recognized it from pictures that I've seen on blogs), but I assume they're not outdoor pets...

Either that, or the rat problem in Somerville is far worse than I imagined!

Poor chinchilla--he's probably freaking out.

What a cute critter! I hope it finds its way home soon.

If it's still there, you might call animal control. I imagine that I would check there first if I lost a pet without a tag. Then if someone sees this post and hears about a lost chinchilla, at least it's off the street and somewhere that it could be recovered (theoretically).

Please call animal control if you still have your eyes on this little guy. He will not live long on his own.

they live in the wild in worse conditions :) perhaps there's a breeding population, and the fur can be spun to make little coats for hairless cats or something :)

Dude, wild chinchillas in Somerville would be awesome! We'd be knee-deep in snuggle-starved softness!

Their natural habitat is the Andes mountains. They'd be pretty miserable here in July and August.

I'm having trouble understanding how you could see a loose chinchilla and not grab it and put it in a cage. This does fit into my worldview!

(I'm a few houses down, by the way -- if you just don't have the resources to harbor a chinchilla, I'd be willing to take it off your hands if you can catch it. :-P)

Update: Just sighted a critter about the size of a rabbit dart freakishly fast across the road to 37 Ossipee. The downstairs cat is patrolling the area with interest. If that was the chinchilla, I can now understand why it was not caught in the first place!

I was going to defend the OP by explaining how quick they move. It would kinda be like trying to catch a healthy rat, not easy.

At any rate, if anyone sees him and can quickly call us we will do our best to catch him and keep him safe.
