Where in the Davis/Porter area can I get a good selection of dried fruit and nuts in those bulk containers? Preferably not at Whole Foods although I'm sure they have some. Thanks!
For that matter, not bulk bins but cheap applies to Market Basket too. In the somerville market basket, walk past all the registers (to the left when you are facing the registers) and to the right past the flowers there is a reasonably priced display of many varieties of bagged, market basket packaged nuts and dried fruits.
Not Davis/Porter, but, hands down the best place to purchase nuts and dried fruit is Superior Nut Company on McGrath Highway, just past the liquor store and directly after the gas station/car wash. There is parking right behind the building. They are open mon-fri until 4pm, not sure when they open. It is the outlet store for their wholesale business, which has been there since the 1940's at least. It's a remarkable place and the quality and prices are top notch. Go there it may change your life.
Also not quite what you're looking for, but notable nonetheless, is Christina's Spices in Inman Square. They have sort of prepacked bulk stuff. Mostly spices, but some other things, including dried fruits and nuts.
Ask for the Ceylon cinnamon sticks! They are amazing! The stuff we normally get for cinnamon is called Cassia cinnamon, and is darker brown and hard. The Ceylon is lighter, redder, and quite soft and flaky and exceptionally sweet!
Also, you might want to check out what Sherman Market, in Union square has for local foods. They do have a few bulk items (smoked salt from Maine, which is quite affordable, and delicious), but alas, not really any dried fruits or nuts, from what I remember (maybe some dried Maine blueberries, MAYBE), and not in bulk.
