I need fillings soon. Recs for trustworthy, feel-comfortable, competent dentists in the area? I'm particularly looking at Dr. Dental in Central or Havard Vanguard in Davis, live near various others as well.
We love Dr. Francis Bane, Jr. on Mass. Ave. at Rindge Ave. next to the funeral home. If his practice isn't open, his brother's - in the same office - might be. Dr. Bane is gentle, competent, conservative (no unnecessary procedures), a second generation dentist. The office is very well run and they take some insurance.

Have you checked out the other dentist discussions on dslj? e.g. http://davis-square.livejournal.com/2499509.html (re: affordable dentistry) Casey Cook also gets rave reviews from people in the community.
I personally liked Dr. Lorna Lally in Davis on College Ave before I had to stop seeing her because of lack of insurance. She let me know of some problems with my teeth that previous dentists hadn't alerted me to before (and that have since been corroborated) and was super nice.
Agreed. I'm fond of her and her practice. When I had fillings done, she was very responsive to the amount of anesthesia I told her I needed. When we found a place in my mouth that was painful, she asked if I wanted to continue and listened.
I love Dr Michalowski at Harvard Vanguard Dental in Davis. He's very competent and his office is great with dental emergencies - I've gotten in seen the same day for things like broken teeth, cracked fillings and tooth aches.
I just went to Dr Lally's practice to break my 15 year streak of not seeing the dentist.
They did a preliminary cleaning (debridement), then a regular cleaning, and I have 2 appointments to get my 3 cavities filled. I haven't caught the name of the hygeinist that worked on my mouth (thinking English is not her first language), but...
I have to say, she broke my phobia of dental work. Now I may sing a different tune after the fillings, but that was the most pain-free and gentle cleaning I've -ever- had.
They were extremely thorough, explained everything they were doing, showed me the x-rays of my teeth, explained THOSE to me, and explained our future plan of action for my mouth with patient efficiency.
Dr Lally's office is on the east side of College St, less than 5 minutes' walk out of the Square.
Edited to add: Dr Lally's office is 8-5 except for Thurs, when they are open til 7. I do not know about weekend hours. They saw me the same day I called to make my initial cleaning appointment, then have called me about cancellations within my preferred time periods. Thursday evenings fill up fast though, so if you don't have a lot of time flexibility, may not be the best practice for you for emergency or urgent care.
Kool Smiles in the Galeria at Porter Square. They were originally kids-only, take adults now, but because of the kid thing they're very calming and reassuring. I'd recommend them to anyone.
I second the recommendation for Dr. Michalowski. I hadn't been to the dentist in more than too long and he didn't judge me or make me feel like a horrible person. He even humored me when I thought my filling had fallen out by checking it for free at the last minute. The filling hadn't fallen out at all but he was patient and kind all the same.

Not especially inexpensive and about a mile from Davis, but I don't think you'll find anyone better.
