The Red Line will not run on weekends to Porter, Davis, and Alewife stations, starting November 5 and continuing through the end of March 2012, in order to make repairs in the tunnel.

I don't see anything on the MBTA website about this, but here's a Boston.com article.

Wow, that's gonna suck. And through winter, too... I get that work needs to be done, but yeah, what's up with the lack of official notice? I haven't seen any signage on the T about it, either.

Take the 77?

(Also too bad they didn't overlap the Porter elevator work with this, to save on shuttle buses over the weekend.)

That just seems to be a neverending project.

Also, the comments on the boston.com article you linked to are a riot.

Thanks for posting this!

Anyone want to make signs to put up, warning people of the impending closures? :-)

Wouldn't you just take the shuttle bus? If nothing else, this will mean free round trips to Harvard Square on weekends.

Warning: Signs will soon be posted with a warning.

Where does one park a bicycle in Harvard Square? I stopped at the Harvard Box Office after work yesterday and was confused to not find any place to park my bicycle except the temporary fencing around that sculpture thing. (There are bicycle racks in Harvard Yard, but that seemed more trouble than it was worth for a 2-minute stop.)

It feels like that Porter elevator work will still be going on in 2050. It's like the new Big Dig.

I wish this was a joke. I could complain about how much this will suck for me, but the real victims will be the businesses of Davis, Porter and Alewife. There goes their holiday business, at the very least.

Well, maybe I can get some money saved up by staying home doing jack-shit every weekend all winter.

*grump*

I just saw that there are now signs up about it at Davis, at least in the elevator. I didn't notice if there were any outside the elevator.

this will stink.

there were signs up on the platform at Alewife earlier today.

This is rather unfortunate, to say the least.

at least they're not closing down during the week too.... but still, what a horrible time of year to make people wait outside for a shuttle bus.

The words that have sprung to my mind upon reading your post are not fit for a public community.

It'll still be possible to get to them on shuttle buses probably, but it will add time and inconvenience to the commute. So you have to *really* want to go somewhere.

Exactly. They couldn't have done this during the summer when waiting outside for a shuttle wouldn't be so bad?

I'm now thinking about holiday travel to and from the airport and South Station. That'll be a joy with a bulky suitcase on a standing-room-only bus.

LOL!

Me too. So I'll just sit here sulking. Not that I use the Red Line much on the weekends, but still.

I hadn't even thought about holiday travel yet. When I do travel (by airport, that is), it is with two children, in strollers with large bulky car seats hanging over the backs and luggage in the form of duffle bags or backpacks on my back. It is a difficult way to travel in good weather with the Red Line running. In the winter and having to take a bus, it just isnt' going to happen. Ugh.

I think it's the same one running through my head.

Hubby has a trip next month, we had -planned- on him taking the train, looks like I'm taking him to Logan. -.-

Just inside the gates of the Yard works well, as long as it isn't Head of the Charles or Commencement or something, when you need a Harvard ID to get in.

That's my biggest problem...even though I live in Southie now, I still shop in Porter and Davis. The stupid elevator was bad enough, but no trains at all? Holy crap.

I'm going to have to plan to go weeknights, after work, which isn't as nice as going on the weekend. Feh.

I think what pisses me off the most is the lack of warning. This is starting the weekend after next and there aren't signs up yet? And I was on the red line today, Broadway-South Station-Downtown X-Park....and nothing. No signs at all. There were several about the elevator in Porter Square, but nothing else. You would think they'd want to give some advance warning to the whole red line, especially on the Alewife-bound side?

Thanks a lot, MBTA.

Biking nonstop is illegal. Bikes have to stop at red lights and stop signs. Bicyclists who ignore the traffic laws put everyone in danger.

They are also installing a TON of bike parking on Dunster St right now behind The Garage. :)

Ugh ugh ugh. The only time I really go beyond Davis is weekends. As someone with a hidden disability (recovering from chemo), it's hard enough to get people to let me sit down on the T. There is no way in hell I have the strength to stand up on a bus - and those are always much harder to snag seats on. Uuuuugh.

And 5 months? In the winter? Seriously?

I don't think the Yard is closed on Harvard-Yale weekend.

For a closure this big, they should put signs in every T station, not just on the Red Line.

Seriously? Every weekend, for five months, through the entire winter? Ye GODS. What a misery that's going to make things, and especially for the local businesses that won't get anyone coming from further than walking distance. (Okay, buses and a shuttlebus, I know, but that's a poor second to subway traffic.) And in winter, of all times. And the holidays!

I can't believe they haven't even announced this on their own site. Well, I can, but ugh.
