Police shut down Diva last night?

I didn't see this, but a friend called to tell me that she saw lots of police cruisers outside Diva last night, that they emptied the place out and wouldn't let people back in, and that people were upset because they had paid $100 to go there.

Anyone know more?

I don't know what happened, but can someone explain to me the attraction of Diva's NYE? Is it an open bar or something?

What time did that happen at, was it at least after midnight (even though after midnight would be this morning instead of last night...)

No idea. For $100 that must have been one awesome band. I'm sure it would have cost a lot less to hang out with Booty Vortex down the street at Johnny D's.

I wasn't there last night but my guess would be overcrowding or less likely a fight that the police thought might get out of hand. NYE is one of if not the busiest times of year for the police so they tend to end things very quickly without much discussion.

Speaking of Diva, I got a notice in my mailbox that Diva Lounge will soon become a falafel restaurant. Does anyone know more about this? I know that their Lounge has had all sorts of issues with late night shenanigans -- and honestly, I've had some ridiculous experiences there with overpriced, silly drinks and awful service -- but I didn't know the place was closing.

I had amazing felafel while in Amsterdam (at Maoz). I guess these guys are working in a similar vein. Kind of a small chain given that it seems to be just one location in DC right now, but hey I'll give 'em a try. :)

I'd be upset too if I'd paid $500 for a "VIP table" at Diva Lounge, of all places, and gotten kicked out before 10pm on NYE.

I believe that open bar/free drinks is allowed when it is an invitation only event, which it looks like is how Diva set this up. There was a bar that I used to go to in Boston (I forget the name) that had similar by invitation only "happy hour" events that allowed them to offer free drinks. I think the way it worked is that they had to have the guest list in advance, and only those on the guest list were allowed to get the free drinks. I also recall going to a similar event in Om in Harvard Square a couple of years ago - I had to RSVP in advance, and then was able to get free drinks.

There still isn't any solid info on what happened? Nobody has tried calling Diva or the police department?
