Mad Oyster studios, site number 91, has two interesting things going on this year. One, Rachel Mello has a new space in the building and it is spectacular. Two, Molly van Nice rarely shows but she is showing this year. Her work is worth a trip -- in fact I made a trip to DC to see it when it was at the Smithsonian.

Museum of Modern Renaissance, 115 College Avenue (SOS map #16) is always worth a look. See art by two Russians, covering every wall and ceiling surface. Their web site will give you some idea what to expect.

She's an installation artist. http://www.artnet.com/magazine/features/dixon/dixon9-5-6.asp is a typical if rather small subset of her work. The level of detail and texture and story is pretty insane.

The fantastical sculptures of Hilary Scott (#87) are always worth a visit. You get to roam his entire house, yard, and garage.

the Artists' Choice Exhibit at the Somerville Museum is worth checking out in and of itself, but also as a way to preview what's out there across the city. the Museum opens at 11 during SOS weekend so you can check it out before everything else.

Martha Ingols does some amazing stuff with color and pattern via quilts. she has functional pieces (purses, bags, cellphone holders) as well as decorative.

Artisan's Asylum (http://artisansasylum.com/) should have a dozen or so artists showing their work, and plenty more hanging out and working in the background. It's a makerspace, a shared/collaborative workshop for a hundred or so makers, crafters, geeks, and other interesting folks.

If you haven't been to the Artists Choice exhibit, you might not know how awesome Mara is at hanging a show that is more than the sum of its parts. And you can go days ahead of time, to help with planning. Definitely pick up a map-book and peruse the web site and make a plan -- there's no way to see all the art in Somerville, even with Friday as an option this year.

On Saturday and Sunday we'll also have music by Yani Batteau, and a treats and snacks sale to benefit the Pets In Need cat shelter. (If it's a day like today they'll have hot chili and hot chocolate).

If you check out the photos on the SOS website, http://somervilleopenstudios.org/visit/photos.php, and scroll about 2/3rds of the way down you'll see Debra Olin's sepia/earth-tone prints of the human body, and then M.L.Van Nice's very white studio installation, followed by one of her artist books (looking worm-eaten).

This looks like a pretty awesome list already! I'd like to add one vote to #65 — the Little House Studios. If I'm remembering the place correctly the artists there are imaginative and a little weird, all in an old house with impossibly steep attic stairs.

Um, the art is a little wierd, and the artists are imaginative. I'll avoid speculating on the weirdness of the artists themselves :)

This is a great list of recommendations! There is also Mudflat Studios, site #94, which I go to every year. They throw a great party on Friday night and have tons of ceramic artists participating. Their new building is at 81 Broadway.

Resa Blatman (http://resablatman.com/paintings/index.html) (2nd floor, 6 Vernon Street) is showing her two latest paintings which are really wonderful and frightening.

This year she's sharing her space with silk screener James Weinberg (http://weinbergdesign.com/?page_id=23) who does great prints. The two have collaborated on two silk screen prints, based on a design by Blatman, specially for the weekend.

Museum of Modern Renaissance is one of my favorites; I try to go every year it's open. Was it closed last year? I seem to recall that. Also, they seem to add a bit more each time. I think the paintings on the outside are new since two years ago.
