I think there's a specific reason not to bring a gun: robbing a bank with a gun carries a much larger penalty than just robbing a bank -- and bank tellers are taught to just give over the money when someone asks for it, as far as I know. (Since it's all insured well beyond what a teller would have in the drawer, there's no incentive for the bank to *not* cooperate with bank robbers...)
