Dear Friends and neighbors,

I encourage any families looking for a warm and engaging Jewish education experience to check out our synagogue's Children's School program, now accepting registrations for classes beginning September 9th. See below for more information.

Welcome to Congregation B'nai Brith Children's School

Our synagogue's children's school is taking registrations. Classes begin September 9. More specific information is below. We hope you'll take the opportunity to learn more about our warm, engaging community and its wonderful teachers and classes. To register call 617-625-0333 or email rabbieliana@gmail.com

Our School

Congregation B'nai Brith Children's School reflects our congregation's commitment to a traditional Judaism informed by progressive thought. We are committed to a vibrant Judaism, rooted in a centuries-old history, yet responsive to a Jewish community that has changed dramatically and continues to evolve.

Our mission is to prepare students for an active, joyful Jewish life experience. Our atmosphere fosters positive Jewish feelings while teaching the basic skills needed to participate in Jewish life. Our students study Jewish holidays, culture, prayer, Hebrew and Torah.

Diversity

Recognizing the strength that comes from diversity, we welcome students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including traditional and non-traditional families. We want all our children to feel welcome, valued and respected, regardless of their background or level of Jewish
knowledge.

Parent Involvement

We believe that parent involvement and awareness are crucial to a child's education. Therefore, we invite parents to stay during school hours to participate in school-wide children's activities. We also schedule programs, discussions and workshops, specifically for parents, during school hours.

Tikkun Olam

Making the world a better place has always been a fundamental part of the Jewish experience. Consequently, Tzedakah (justice), Tikkun Olam (the repairing of the world), and social action are integral parts of our program. Our students are involved in projects like Family Table and Somerville Save Our Homes Walk.

Our Faculty

The faculty is the heart of any school. All of our teachers are knowledgeable about Judaism and competent in Hebrew. Most importantly, however, they are actively involved in Jewish life and create a sense of excitement that energizes our school and motivates our children.

Our Programs:

Nitzanim

Nitzanim is our program for 4-year-olds. Nitzanim meet monthly from 9:30-10:30 am. The program is designed to share the fun of Sunday school with those of us too young to be in our K-7 program. At Nitzanim your child will learn about the Jewish Holidays , Shabbat, and the alef-bet through song and art.

Sunday school

Grades K-5 meet weekly on Sundays 9:30 am to noon.
Grades 6-7 meet twice a week, Sundays 9:30 am to noon
and Tuesday 4:00 – 5:45 pm.

On a typical Sunday we have two sessions – Hebrew and Judaica.

Between those two sessions, the entire school meets at the chapel for snack, a short recess, and music time. We learn new songs from prayers, and Jewish camp music in Hebrew and English. Sometimes, we learn Israeli dancing or do a drama workshop. At 11:45 am following the second session, we meet at the chapel again, this time with parents for the end of the day community prayer, tefillah, led by the school children.

Tuesday classes are meant to allow students more focused learning as they near their bar/bat mitzvah. The Tuesday afternoon class includes a Hebrew and a Judaica session. The Judaica component of the Tuesday class is taught by our education director and rabbi, Eliana Jacobowitz. Classes focus on learning the Shabbat morning liturgy, and on forming our personal sense of Jewish identity.

Our Tuesday program does not replace private tutoring in preparation for Bar/Bat Mitzvah but rather complements it.
