According to several commenters in this post, LJ has recently broken this in a way that prevents some people from leaving reply comments in the proper thread. They now have to leave only top-level comments, which can disrupt the flow of the conversation and doesn't notify people that they have been replied to.
If you are a regular reader and participant here, please avoid this problem by joining the community. Thanks!
