From Somerville Patch

Citing a conflict with balancing family life with his duties of an alderman, Roche handed in is letter of resignation Thursday night. Somerville School Committee member Maureen Bastardi was appointed as his replacement.

Ward 1 Alderman William Roche, who served on the Somerville Board of Aldermen for 17 years, voluntarily resigned from the Board Thursday night.

"After 17 years as the Ward 1 alderman, I still thoroughly enjoy the job," Roche said. "However, I have found that due to conflicting personal, social and family priorities I am no longer able to dedicate the time required to effectively and succesfully do the job."

"You are all part of my extended family," Roche said before handing in his letter of resignation.

In addition to serving on the Board for 17 years, Roche served as acting mayor of the city in 1999.

After Roche resigned, the Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to appoint Maureen Bastardi, who represented Ward 1 on the Somerville School Committee, as his replacement. Bastardi was sworn in Thursday night after formally resigning from the School Committee.

"I'm looking forward to serving with you," Bastardi told the Board, thanking their "confidence" in her.

In stepping down, Roche listed a number of the Board's accomplishments over his 17-year tenure as memorable, including its passing of a living wage ordinance, anti-gang ordinance, ethics ordinance and a $25 million bond to jump start development in Assembly Square.

Other members of the Board expressed sadness that he was stepping down. Board President Thomas Taylor said that Roche approached him a week previously about stepping down and almost didn't want to support his resignation.

Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and outgoing register of deeds, Eugene Brune, a former mayor of Somerville, also spoke about Roche's tenure and congratulated Bastardi on her appointment.

Somerville Patch will have more on this story soon.

Will this require a special election for the School Committee seat, or will the Mayor or the Board of Aldermen appoint Bastardi's replacement?
