before the answer was posted here, I reposted your question to the City of Somerville's Facebook page. They replied: "This is not a safety barricade. There is no cause for public concern regarding this street closure."

I walked past this street closure on the way to Magnificent Muffin on Friday, and one of the Somerville cops standing guard at Curis & Broadway told me off the record that the Westboro Baptist church was protesting in Medford at that very moment and they (the cops) had blocked off this section of Curtis to prevent them from picketing outside the slain officer's home.

I have no clue why WBC would have chosen Medford, does anyone else know? Did anyone see them in Medford? A quick google search reveals that they plan to be in Medford tomorrow for the funeral of one of the victims.
