We have a four-year-old Hoover that's starting to behave like it really needs a tuneup, and probably a replacement power cord - any recommendations or anti-recommendations?

(I can find a lot of reviews of the shop on the corner of Day Street, but just with regard to how they deal with sewing machines and sewing-related questions - not so much with the vacuums, other than that they have Miele models in the window...)

Thanks!

There is a lovely shop in Waltham on Moody St. if you find yourself there that does repairs of vacuums of all sorts, Mr. Sweeper Sew & Vac. My only experience with the place on the corner of Day and Elm is indeed limited to our Miele.

Ive never gotten "service" from them for our Hoover World Vac (more a diy type) but, have bought parts from them. They did have to order the parts I needed and that was only about a week to wait. Ive seen various other makes in their back room in for repair so, Id suggest giving them a call to see if they are able to work on your vac.

I have had my old Miele tuned up at the sewing machine/vacuum shop in Davis. I think they did fine, but my old Miele (which was either free or "for the price of a 2 family house in Somerville" depending on how you look at it) was possibly beyond the point where a tuneup would suddenly make it perform well enough to compete with a recently-purchased vaccuum. They might have also replaced a part.
The pricing was fine, they seem to have handled it competently, their staff possibly lacked some "people skills" but so what. it was a lot more convenient than going to another vacuum cleaner shop further away (I think I have also brought that machine to the Oreck shop in Arlington heights, before, and found similar lack of "people skills" and the vacuum was less noticeably better after the tuneup.)

Now I have a new Miele I bought from Tags and have not yet needed to tune it up.
