Sour cherries?

Does anyone know of somewhere in the Somerville/Cambridge area that has sour cherries for sale? I'm looking for fresh, not canned or jarred. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: FOUND 'EM!!! They randomly had tart cherries by the dry quart for $3.99 at the Stop and Shop on McGrath Highway today. W00t! Now, to Kappy's for more Luxardo!

You may have tried these places already, I dunno, but what about Whole Foods? The Harvest Co-op in Central Square? Trader Joe's?

I've definitely seen them at Kimball Fruit Farm at the farmers' market the last two weeks -- this was in Arlington but I bet they have them at other farmers' markets too.

I'm pretty sure I also saw them at the Fresh Pond Whole Foods.

What are you going to use them for?

Oh, and -- it's less local, but if you want them enough to travel, you could try Russo's -- I think of them as having EVERYTHING. :)

The ones I last got from Kimball were sweet. I can check again when I see them at the Central Square FM on Monday. I haven't seen them at the Whole Foods on River Street, but if I get a chance to get out to the Fresh Pond one, I can check there.

I want to use them to make homemade maraschino cherries. I've used sweet cherries for that in the past, but they're traditionally done with tart marasca cherries, and I think that the tart ones would have a nice flavor.

Good point! I have to figure out how to get there by public transit, or wait for my driving-enabled fiancé to come home.

The easiest way is to take the 70 or 70A bus from Central, get off at Emerson Rd (about a mile west of Watertown Square), and walk south. The last time I was there, there was a sidewalk from the dead end of Stanley Avenue through to Pleasant Street.

Do you have a good recipe/directions for others wanting to make maraschino cherries?

Apparently you can pick your own cherries around here:

I also found in the past that Smolak farm (http://www.smolakfarms.com/) and Tougas Farm (http://Tougas farm) had sour cherry picking in past years but I'm not sure if the season is over now. I saw someone else mention wilson farm in lexington too.

Please let us know if you find some, if nothing else I want to make a sour cherry pie.

Thanks! Unfortunately, looking at the websites you provided, it appears I missed my chance this year to pick my own--cherry season was over earlier this month, I guess. Oh well! I'll try again next year.

My "recipe" such as it is, is pretty much the same as this one (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ted-allen/real-maraschino-cherries-recipe/index.html). And having found this, I also found a ray of hope: if the fabulous Ted Allen tells me I can use jarred sour cherries in syrup in a pinch to make maraschinos, I suspect it is true. Hooray! I still want to try it with fresh sour cherries someday, though.

It looks like some places just finished tart cherries or cherry picking in general yesterday even so there may be hope or at least some still in a farm stand or local store from a local farm.
