Potbelly sandwich shop, on the first floor of what used to be Pizzeria Uno, officially opens this Wednesday.

Tomorrow morning from 7 to 9 am, you can donate $5 to Green Streets Initiative and get a "free" breakfast. They want you to fill out this form

but in practice I think they'll let anyone drop by. (They had the same promotion today, for lunch. It was pretty tasty.)

Also, I did not realize that the Porter Square Walgreens had already opened. The store is open 24 hours, but the pharmacy counter is not. I wonder whether it really makes sense for Walgreens to devote much of the first floor to groceries, given that Shaw's across the street is also open 24 hours.

(If you're new to the area... both Walgreens and Potbelly are in the small shopping center at the northeast corner of Somerville Ave. and White Street, across White Street from the big Shaw's-Tags shopping center.)

Aw, man. I know it's a big chain and all, but I am such a sucker for Potbelly's subs (and fresh-baked cookies). They're one of the things I miss about Ann Arbor. This is exciting news.

Walgreens also opened right across the way from a CVS. I have a feeling that they're trying to out-fancy CVS and out-convenient Shaw's. I suppose we'll see how it turns out.

They also, I believe, opened a mega-store in downtown crossing (the red sox radio broadcast/commercial made it sound almost like a Tesco), so I think they are generally trying to change their image/strategy a bit.

Really? Not that I was looking forward to Walgreens' sushi, necessarily, but when the store was first announced as a "concept store", they touted sushi as one of the wares:

I am also pretty excited about the Potbelly's...before I heard about the store in Porter Square (and the existence of another in the financial district) I didn't know that they existed outside of airports.

Thanks for posting this. We took advantage. The breakfast sandwiches were good (although they don't really take advantage of their toppings model). Mollie said the coffee was excellent--worth stopping by for.
