Starting in September, we’ll be running regular afterschool + workshop programs five days a week. Topics range from bookmaking to computer programming, and are all based out of our shop space at 577 Somerville Ave. We also have some great classes scheduled for fall semester - we hope you'll check them out!

For details or to register, visit www.partsandcrafts.org!

Upcoming Classes and Workshops

Minecraft Modding. A 4-session computer programming class based around creating mods for Minecraft. If you want to take, or sign someone up for this class, you already know what Minecraft mods are. In fact, it’s very likely that your child is borderline obsessed with this game. And with good reason, we think — it’s whimsical and fun while being creative and deep, and has a wonderfully well-developed and deceptively simple aesthetic. Making mods involves rewriting Java source code and is a fantastic way to learn about how large scale, structured software projects come to be. Saturdays, September 21 - October 12 (4 sessions), 10-11:30 am. Cost: $100, sliding scale

Afterschool at Parts and Crafts, 5 days a week!

Monday: Open Shop. We'll have our electronics workbench and basic shop setup, plus hot glue guns, wood scraps, LEDs, motors, googly eyes, various other building materials, plus some projects to get you started. Sample projects might include: bristlebots, motorcars, boffer swords, marshmallow launchers, and various projects of your own devising. Mondays, September 16 - December 16 (12 sessions), 3-5 pm Cost: $240 / semester, $10-20 / drop-in rate

Tuesday: Computer Club. A weekly meet-up for kids who like to code. We use Scratch, a graphical based programming language that is easy to use, as an introduction to programming, then switch over to Python or Java for more advanced projects. We have some computers, but typically not nearly enough -- so if kids have laptops, they should bring them! Tuesdays, September 17-December 17 (12 sessions), 3-5 pm. Cost: $240 / semester, $10-20 / drop-in rate

Wednesday: Circus and Art with Kieran and Kelly! Want to learn to juggle? Make jewelry? Balance things on your nose? Make things out of clay? Paint? Decontextualize noun phrases? Then Wednesdays might be for you. An afterschool hangout for climbing trees, playing wacky word games, and going to the park to play deliberately. Wednesdays, September 18-December 18 (12 sessions), 3-5 pm. Cost: $240 / semester, $10-20 / drop-in rate

Thursday: Functional DIY. Books, shoes, bags, clothes, hats… If you’ve ever thought “Hey, that’s a cool thing! I want to make one of those!” then Tuesdays in January at Parts & Crafts are for you! We’ll be making artistically visually pleasing yet completely functional objects that you can really use! Thursdays, September 19 - December 19 (12 sessions), 3-5 pm. Cost: $240 / semester, $10-20 / drop-in rate

Friday: Board Games! Calling all gamers! It's the end of the week, and time to kick back and play some serious strategy games. Risk, Axis and Allies, Hey that's my Fish, and Magic: the Gathering, with lots of other games thrown into the mix. Fridays, September 20 - December 20 (12 sessions), 3-5 pm. Cost: $240 / semester, $10-20 / drop-in rate
