I checked the archives and this particular question hasn't been addressed. I own only a cell phone, and when I dial 311, it gives me Cambridge 311, not Somerville.
I live between Porter and Union, a block east of Somerville Ave so it's not like I'm super close to the Cambridge border (if it even works that way).
I think I remember that originally the 311 was only good with land lines, and there was a full number to dial if you had a cell - which is fine because you can just program it in. But the full number I have also goes to Cambridge.
What am I doing wrong? Can anyone update me? I'm nearly positive I've used this before and its been fine.

You don't need a cell, and it should work. I had a point in the early days of 311 when it wasn't working with my cell, and I happened to be in the same room as Mayor Joe and mentioned this to him, and he went on this total rampage of Fix All The Things Now. So I would mention your problem to the city -- they probably want to fix that bug.

The other phone number for the 311 service is 617-666-3311 and that has how I've called from my cell in the past. The call goes to the same place. Not as easy to remember as three digits, but I have it stored in my cell under 311/Somerville. 311 also has very helpful twitter and Facebook accounts with prompt responses if that helps.

I didn't know Cambridge even had 311. What "full number" are you calling that goes there?

What full number do you have? The 311 webpage (http://www.somervillema.gov/departments/constituent-Services) gives 617-666-3311 for outside of Somerville, but doesn't mention cell phones specifically.

eta whoa i'm slow today apparently

Ron posted this # in his post on the 15th, funnily enough. I also didn't have it in my cell and had to add it. It's the same for dialing 911 from a cell, it goes to the tower location, so if you want a particular PD you need to go get the number first.

I bet they put that in every email that goes out, but I usually read on my phone and don't see it. I definitely put it in my phone after yours, thinking, "how conveeeenient."

I could not reach 311 from outside Hub Comics on Bow St in Union Square last night. My phone (which uses AT&T) didn't even get ringing from a call to 311; it just gave up after about 20 seconds.
