Lots of Free Women's Clothing

There are 4 big bags of women's clothing on my lawn at 7 Bay State Avenue, yours for the taking. Pick what you want or take it all. Mostly size 8 - 14 casuals and some blazers. They're all perfectly good, but they don't fit me anymore as I expand like an early-stage dying sun (stop back next year for the size 16s that will be too small by then! Ugh...)

Before anyone says "Goodwill," I have no car and a bad foot and am 3/4ths of a mile from Goodwill, so it's not happening. But be my guest if you have a car or a sturdy pack animal. Some of the items are worthy of consignment, IMO.

For future such situations, I'll plug Big Brother Big Sister, who do pickups (http://www.bbbsfoundation.org/Pickup-and-Drop-off-Information). They come through Somerville regularly, or you can schedule a pickup when needed.

For those who have the ability to choose where they donate, Goodwill is a really problematic option, anyway. Many of their stores pay subminimum wage to some of their workers, and while many of their stores have perfectly reasonable wages, their parent organization supports the "right" of stores to pay subminimum wage. https://nfb.org//americans-disabilities-protest-goodwill’s-subminimum-wages The argument they make is basically the same as the archaic arguments made by 19th-century manufacturing tycoons against having a minimum wage at all and against things like having a maximum workday of 12 hours and basic workplace safety regulations.

There is an immoral but perfectly legal clause in a Federal employment act that allows qualified "work programs" for people with disabilities (and I believe some other groups, such as the formerly incarcerated) to pay subminimum wage.

I think it applies to currently incarcerated people, not formerly incarcerated people. There was a recent scandal about Whole Foods using prison labor and paying ridiculously low wages.

This article was such crap..the program actually is a work training program paid for by the dairy that also allows them access to local goats milk...

Also has nothing to do with Whole Foods, except they sell the cheese - and lots of other cheese. If you don't like the idea of a prison work training program supplying milk for a cheese maker, then buy Cabot - it's a coop.

I don't see anything about the formerly incarcerated, but here is their response to the disabilities program. Seems pretty straightforward - they can legally not pay people with disabilities minimum wage...

Another good donation alternative that does pickups, for future reference: the Big Thrifty (https://www.facebook.com/TheBigThrifty). It's an annual plus size (XL/14+) thrift shopping event that benefits a charity (this past year, IMPACT Boston (http://www.impactboston.org/)).
