Living in the Davis Square area and was wondering if anyone knew of state or local ordinances regarding installation of gas driers? I know some places require a permit, inspection etc. Is this the sort of thing 311 would know?
A permit is required if you are talking about running a gas line. Actually a permit is required for anything ISD wants no matter how trivial or even if building code explicitly says one is not requires, as the local authority may make up their own code. That aside, running a gas line definitely requires a permit, your plumber should pull it. It is in your interest anyway. It might cost more, but it is a good way to keep plumber honest and keep work standards up, and have everything be legit legally when it is time to sell. Somerville plumbing inspection office is very professional, prompt, easy to schedule.
If you are talking about replacing an existing gas dryer with a new one in the same location, I'm not sure, I would ask the plumbing department as ISD.
Hooking up to an existing gas line doesn't need a permit/inspection, but running a new gas line to another location will require a permit. Either way, I'd recommend having the work done by a licensed professional plumber or gas fitter.
What every one has said so far is completely true- and I cannot stress enough, from experience, to get a licensed plumber. I will tell you if you are just replacing an existing gas dryer with a new one you will be fine- from all the work I had done I know that a "hard pipe" is required for a gas dryer not a flex hose.
