I've talked to people about this/ have paid way too much attention to the Star Market brand since I was a kid... Shaw's was bought out about two years ago by a Canadian company who wanted to do away with loyalty cards, feeling that they should be able to offer lower prices to ALL customers, not just a special few. There was a deal for a bit where if you turned one in, you got a coupon for a free soda or something. The company then felt that it should go back to its Boston roots, and slowly rebranded all Shaw's back to Star Market, starting with the one in Allston at Packard's Corner. Self check out was done away with at the Porter location in favour of a stronger focus on customer service, but they continue to exist in other locations.
