The Long Now Foundation was established in 01996* to develop the Clock and Library projects, as well as to become the seed of a very long-term cultural institution. The Long Now Foundation hopes to provide a counterpoint to today's accelerating culture and help make long-term thinking more common. We hope to creatively foster responsibility in the framework of the next 10,000 years.

It's been up and running for a long time in San Francisco. But those of us on the east coast feel left out of the seminars and events (although I do stream many of the talks and enjoy those, at least before I fall asleep).
Anyway--some regional fans of Long Now are beginning to organize a local chapter for talks and events. The inaugural meeting will be Tuesday, Nov 17, 6:30pm at The Burren. We'll be clustering out in the front area somewhere, not sure how big this will be just yet. From the email I got:
With no agenda, this is simply an opportunity to meet other area Long Now members and have a casual discussion about what we'd like to see in a local Long Now group - and get to know each other.
If you know and like this organization, or might like to hear more, gather with us. If we have a quorum and sufficient interest, maybe this will be a regular thing. More formal organizational stuff to come.
